The aspen leaf miner, Phyllocnistis populiella, feeds on the contents of epidermal cells on both top (adaxial) and bottom (abaxial) surfaces of quaking aspen leaves, leaving the photosynthetic tissue of the mesophyll intact. This type of feeding is taxonomically restricted to a small subset of leaf mining insects but can cause widespread plant damage during outbreaks. We studied the effect of epidermal mining on aspen growth and physiology during an outbreak of P. populiella in the boreal forest of interior Alaska. Experimental reduction of leaf miner density across two sites and 3 years significantly increased annual aspen growth rates relative to naturally mined controls. Leaf mining damage was negatively related to leaf longevity. Leaves with heavy mining damage abscised 4 weeks earlier, on average, than leaves with minimal mining damage. Mining damage to the top and bottom surfaces of leaves had different effects on physiology. Mining on the top surface of the leaf had no significant effect on photosynthesis or conductance and was unrelated to leaf stable C isotope ratio (delta(13)C). Mining damage to the bottom leaf surface, where stomata are located, had significant negative effects on net photosynthesis and water vapor conductance. Percent bottom mining was positively related to leaf delta(13)C. Taken together, the data suggest that the primary mechanism for the reduction of photosynthesis by epidermal leaf mining by P. populiella is the failure of stomata to open normally on bottom-mined leaves.

Breathing ground-level ozone can trigger a variety of health problems including chest pain, coughing, throat irritation, and congestion. It can worsen bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. If the tree is simply scratched, wash the wound out with plain soap and water to help reduce the number of pathogens that may be in the scratch and that could cause further damage. Wash the wound thoroughly with plain water after this. Allow the scratch to heal in the open air. Do not use a sealant.


The Palmetto state has a seismic past and will, no doubt, tremble again as quakes shake the ground beneath our feet. Earthquakes are not an uncommon occurrence in South Carolina. (See the Report on a 3.6 Magnitude Earthquake in the Lowcountry) The South Carolina Geological Survey (SCGS) is interested in making South Carolinians aware of our seismic past, what causes our earthquakes, what is being done to reduce the losses that will result from future quakes, and what you should do before, during, and after an earthquake.


SCGS is now conducting studies to evaluate the geologic response to earthquake-induced motion in an attempt to help reduce the risk to lives and property. An example of these studies is the map showing where the Coastal Plain is most susceptible to severe ground shaking (Figure 10). Once data about an area have been gathered, maps that show levels of risk for an area can be produced. Seismic-risk studies will become more important as a statewide earthquake hazard mitigation strategy is developed.


Sometimes, during pruning, a weak limb will be spotted. Large, weak limbs can be supported using bracing or cabling. With tree cabling, specialized hardware including eye bolts and cables are installed in the upper canopy of trees to help reduce the chance of splitting or cracking. These cables will need to be adjusted or replaced as your tree grows.


Essential tremor is often mistaken for Parkinson's disease, but the two conditions differ in several ways. Essential tremor is an action tremor, meaning that the involuntary shaking increases when you move and try to use your hands. In Parkinson's disease, tremors occur mainly at rest, and activity reduces the symptoms. Some people with essential tremor develop head nodding or shaking; few people with Parkinson's do. Balance problems and rigidity of the arms and legs are common features of Parkinson's disease but not of essential tremor. One of the hallmarks of essential tremor, useful in diagnosing the disorder, is that alcohol can temporarily ease symptoms; in Parkinson's, alcohol has little effect on the tremor.


Medications. Propranolol (Inderal) and primidone (Mysoline) are most effective in reducing tremors. Propranolol is a beta blocker, also used to treat high blood pressure and performance anxiety. Its side effects are mild to moderate and include slow heartbeat, fatigue, and shortness of breath. (People with asthma should not take propranolol.) Primidone is an antiseizure medication with mild to moderate side effects that include drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, nausea, and dizziness. Both of these drugs can reduce tremors by as much as 50%.


Surgery. If medications don't help essential tremor, surgery may. Surgery always carries risk, and the risk is especially great for operations involving the brain. The two best-studied surgical treatments for severe limb tremor that hasn't responded to medications are thalamotomy and deep brain stimulation (DBS). Both procedures can help reduce limb tremors; they are less useful for head shaking and a quavering voice.


Charge attacks have a hard damage cap of 13.1 million, but is reduced to 6.6 million in most Impossible Raids. Regardless of how many effects that increase the damage cap are applied, damage exceeding this value is reduced to an insignificantApproximately 0.01% (verification needed) number. The only way charge attack damage can exceed this hard damage cap is through sources of Special C.A. Damage Cap Up found in the Universal Guidebook in Replicard Sandbox, weapon skills, character skills, and character EMPs.


Treatment with insecticide reduced leaf mining damage by the willow leaf blotch miner, Micrurapteryx salicifoliella, and increased both the biomass and proportion of the total production of woody tissue browsed by moose. Salix interior plants with experimentally-reduced insect damage produced significantly more stem biomass than controls, but did not differ in stem quality as indicated by nitrogen concentration or protein precipitation capacity, an assay of the protein-binding activity of tannins.


Indirect interactions may occur between distantly-related herbivore taxa that differ greatly in body size and feed on different plant tissues at different times of year, such as insect folivores and mammalian browsers [7]. Browsing can have strong effects on plant performance, species composition, and vegetation structure [8,9,10], and the impacts of browsers on plant performance and mortality typically exceed those of insects [7, 11,12,13,14,15]. It is therefore not surprising that browsers also tend to have strong direct and indirect effects on herbivorous insects, a hypothesis addressed by numerous studies and several recent reviews [7, 16, 17]. In contrast, the effects of insect herbivory on mammalian browsing have rarely been studied and remain a poorly understood aspect of interaction ecology [7]. Damage to leaves caused by insect feeding could impact the foraging behavior of browsers by reducing plant quantity and quality [18]. Leaf damage by insects can decrease the size of shoots on shared host plants [19,20,21,22], reducing forage availability for browsers and potentially altering patterns of food selection by browsers that prefer host species and individuals with large stems over small [23, 24]. Leaf damage may also influence subsequent browse quality by altering the nutritional and defensive chemistry of stems. For example, heavy defoliation of aspen increased the concentration of nitrogen and reduced the concentration of phenolic glycosides and condensed tannins in aspen stems [25]. Regardless of mechanism, a change in food selection by browsers in response to prior insect herbivory could potentially modify the direct fitness effects of insect herbivory on plants.


During an outbreak of the leaf miner M. salicifoliella, we investigated whether insect folivory during the growing season altered the consumption of, and preference for, winter-dormant stems of Salix interior Rowlee by moose. We hypothesized that insect folivory would reduce stem production, resulting in lower consumption of, and preference for, willow stems on unmanipulated study subplots relative to paired subplots with experimentally-reduced levels of insect folivory. In addition, we investigated whether insect folivory altered tannin protein precipitation capacity [33] and stem nitrogen concentration.
